2019 Step Challenge

Get Healthy, Get Happy

February 22 - April 3, 2019

Celebrate with us on April 3rd

The American Public Health Association (APHA) has challenged Americans to collectively walk 1 billion steps by National Public Health Week (first week of April), a time to raise awareness of what it takes to improve everyone's health, from clean air to good nutrition to sound health policies. In 2017 we logged 70 million steps.  in 2018, 100 million. Join us as we reach for 130 million in 2019.

We are 3rd healthiest  among all states.  Can we do better?  Can we surpass Mass. (#2) and wave bye to Hawaii to become #1? How can we get there?

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, recommends this strategy to boost  CT health: “Foster social connections within communities and cultivate empowered and civically engaged youth.”

What better way to accomplish this than to organize Step Challenge teams comprised of members that support each other physically and mentally  as they walk together? Our CPHA Mentors on Request (MOR) connect with the next generation by talking to students about public health concepts and careers as they walk, furthering the recommendations of RWJF.

Join us for  the 2019 CPHA Step Challenge and help us take our step record to new heights.

Get recognized at our April 3rd awards event:

  •  Be among the top 3 teams with the highest recorded steps.
  • Send us your best ≤ 2-minute video (you can take it with your phone) telling us about your Step Challenge experience.  What made it special?  How did it help you, a student, or people in your community?
  •   In your own words: Send us a short essay ≤500 words or a poem about your walk.

FAQs

• When do I sign up?

You can sign up now.  Registering after February 22nd is possible, but it will be more difficult to win with fewer days to walk. (Of course, you can make up for any lost days with a bigger team.) You can also add members each week. Be sure to include their names and note the change in members from week to week.

• Do I need to be part of a team to participate?

Yes.  You need at least one other member, or you are welcome to join the CPHA team.  We
encourage everyone to walk with others, because it is mentally as well as physically healthy.

• Is there a fee to sign-up?

No, however, we greatly appreciate donations to CPHA , from organizations and
individuals. Donations support our educational, advocacy and internship programs.

MOVE AND MENTOR

We encourage you to Move and MentorMove and Mentor  is the CPHA MOR-HOSA Future Health Professionals 2018 Step Challenge program that received recognition from International HOSA.  This year  we are expanding it from 13 to 20 HOSA teams and to other student teams beyond those with a health career focus. Educators can request a public health mentor to talk about timely issues and strategies to make their community a better place to live, work, play and grow.  The Step Challenge is a great opportunity to not only get out and walk but also to get to know a public health mentor: It is a win-win, for students and your community.

1. Register Now:  You can register as a Step Challenge Team here. Your team can range from two members to an entire group. Members, count your steps every day: Use a Fitbit, phone, pedometer or step converter to get credit for all your activity.

2. Go one step further: Join the STUDENT FOCUSED MOVE and MENTOR program: Help students learn how to prepare for disasters, prevent diseases, and contribute to healthier workplaces and communities. Find a mentor to walk and talk with at CPHA Mentors on Request (MOR).

3. Earn recognition for CPHA: Mentors and students can get in on the fun!
  • For Students: Walk with a mentor at least once. Then send a video (≤2 minutes) or brief description (no more than 500 words) about the experience.
    • For example, ask about the mentor’s career pathway and how to navigate yours. Find tips on questions for mentors in our Speed Mentoring Guide.
  • For Mentors: Send us a brief video captured on a cell phone to tell us about your experience.  Let us know if it led to a capstone or an internship opportunity. Did it benefit you or your organization to spend time with a student?
