CPHA 2020 Step Challenge

Step into a new decade.

March 9 - April 12, 2020

Join us for the Connecticut Public Health Association’s (CPHA) 2020 Step Challenge.

CPHA is holding its 4th Annual Step Challenge in support of the American Public Health Association's One Billion Step Challenge.  CPHA invites you to join us as we log 100 million steps towards the APHA One Billion Step goal. In conjunction with the American Public Health Association’s Billion Steps Challenge, we hope you will join CPHA to log 100 million steps by the end of National Public Health Week (April 12). We know that this year, as we face the coronavirus, our CPHA Step Challenge is making a difference in the health of individuals,  team members and in their broader communities. As one of our team members wrote this week:

"Thank you for organizing these daily walks. Who would have known we would be gathering for both our physical and our mental health. Walking has allowed us all to feel connected during this confusing time.  As long as we accumulate our steps walking near but not next to one another, this time outside is serving to keep us well in all sorts of ways.” Brie Quinby, Farmington

While most teams started on March 9th, it’s not too late to sign up.  Walking outside with others keeping a safe six feet apart is an opportunity to strengthen social connections, making all the difference in the quality of our personal lives and in the strength of our communities as we all respond to and recover from the havoc caused by the coronavirus.

Whether you are interested in joining the challenge as an individual or a team, you are welcome to participate. The size of the team is entirely up to you. Invite friends, colleagues, and family to join your team by registering below.Be sure to create a team name and register as soon as you can to gather enough steps to win prizes! Note: You and/or your teammates do NOT need to be members of CPHA to engage in the Step Challenge.

Please share your stories on Facebook (Connecticut Public Health Association) and Twitter (@CTPublicHealth) at #CPHAStepChallenge

The team with the highest average step count during the challenge will receive the following prizes*:

  • Free CPHA Membership for the entire team!
  • Recognition at the CPHA annual meeting in October!
  • The University of New Haven’s MPH Program will donate $500 to a public health non-profit of your team’s choice!

*To be eligible for the prize, the teams must consist of three or more members who report steps each week of the challenge. Individuals (i.e. not in a team) are more than welcome to participate, but will not be eligible for the prize.

Instructions for Team Captains:

1. Report your weekly step counts every WEDNESDAY,while the Step Challenge is taking place (March 9th to April 12th.) The reporting period starts on Monday and ends on Sunday of a given week. Results must be reported to the website by the Team Captain on Wednesday of that week.

2. Have all team members use a step count tracker app (e.g., StepUp), pedometer, wearables (fitness bands or trackers) or step converter to get credit for all activity.  As Team Captain, you are responsible for tracking each participant’s steps and reporting it here in aggregate.

3. Send a reminder each Monday morning to your team members to send you their step count for that week.

4. Finally, share pictures with us on Facebook and Twitter and tag us at #CPHAStepChallenge.

Enjoy being healthy and knowing that you are a positive influence on public health!

• When do I sign up?

You can sign up now.  Registering after March 8 is possible, but it will be more difficult to win with fewer days to walk. You can also add members each week. Be sure to include their email addresses and note the number of member’s steps you are reporting each week.

• Do I need to be part of a team to participate?

No.  Whether you are interested joining the challenge as an individual or a team, you are welcome to participate. The size of the team is entirely up to you.

• Is there a fee to sign-up?

No, however, we greatly appreciate donations to CPHA, from organizations and individuals. Donations support our educational, advocacy and internship programs.
