Job Alert: Sanitarian I, City of Meriden

The City of Meriden, Department of Health and Human Services, is hiring a full time (40 hour) Sanitarian I to work in a busy Environmental Health office. The City of Meriden conducts over 1,100 food inspections and respond to over 900 nuisance complaints annually.


This position is responsible for performing routine inspections of food service establishments, public swimming pools, licensed day care centers and other facilities as required by State and local codes. The Sanitarian I also responds to environmental nuisance complaints such as garbage and rubbish disposal, rodent and insect infestation, disease vectors, and other unsanitary environmental conditions; may also investigate reports of foodborne illness, and oil and chemical spills in conjunction with other City departments. The position is responsible for explaining and enforcing the laws, ordinances and regulations governing and environmental sanitation while maintaining accurate records. Effective communication and ability to establish and maintain working relationships with other City employees, businesses, and the public.


The Sanitarian I position requires a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university with major course work in public or environmental health, biological sciences, sanitary or environmental engineering, or an Associate’s degree with 3 years’ experience in a regulatory environmental health capacity such as food safety. The applicant must be certified in Food Service Inspection and Lead Inspector or Lead Risk Assessor Certification, or eligible for certification by the State Connecticut Department of Public Health within one year of employment. The applicant must possess a current Connecticut motor vehicle operator’s license. The starting salary is $52,707 annually.
