Brought to you by APHA's Physical Activity and Public Health Education and Health Promotion Sections, this webinar will highlight several aspects of the role of physical activity in the prevention of type 2 diabetes.

The webinar will feature:

  • An overview of the current diagnostic criteria of type 2 diabetes;
  • A summary of the current scientific evidence of physical activity in the prevention of type 2 diabetes in people with impaired glucose tolerance;
  • Examples of research projects using the experiences of the US Diabetes Prevention Program and the Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study;
  • A Q &A with webinar presenter Noël C Barengo.

Presenter

Noël C Barengo, MD, MPH, PhD
Barengo received his academic training at the University of Kuopio (Finland), the Karolinska Institute (Sweden) and the University of Zurich (Switzerland): MD (1999); MPH (2001); PhD (2006); and was adjunct professor in public health at the University of Helsinki (2009). His research interests are prevention and control of hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, tobacco control and physical activity. Barengo is one of the most highly respected and well-known international experts in diabetes prevention in Latin America. As an expert in diabetes screening and prevention, his services have been requested by many countries in the Americas including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay and Peru. His scientific work is well known in the community of diabetes prevention worldwide, and he has been invited to many international congresses as a speaker presenting the findings of his studies. He has published 70 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and three book chapters. He is an assistant professor at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, Florida International University.
